Krishna Rao’s path into data engineering has been both unexpected and deeply rewarding. He began his career in the pharmaceutical software industry, initially interviewing for a Java developer position but ultimately stepping into a technical support role. Rather than viewing the shift as a detour, Krishna embraced the opportunity and quickly became a trusted partner to clients. His background in Java enabled him to diagnose issues efficiently and propose thoughtful, effective solutions—contributions that soon caught the attention of the engineering team.

As Krishna grew in his role, so did his interest in SQL and ETL work. While he had originally envisioned a traditional developer career path, he found himself increasingly drawn to working with data. He began writing procedures to resolve urgent issues and streamline operations, demonstrating both initiative and technical curiosity. This growing passion led him to join a data-focused engineering group, where he expanded his expertise in data pipelines and strengthened his foundation in data engineering fundamentals.

That same drive ultimately brought Krishna to WellSky. Today, he serves as a Senior Data Engineer on the Integration and ETL team, continuing to broaden his expertise across cloud services and modern data technologies. He works across a range of cloud platforms, with deep experience in Google Cloud Platform and hands-on experience in AWS, BigQuery modeling, Python, and AI. The transition from ETL developer to Senior Data Engineer presented significant challenges, but it has also been one of the most rewarding aspects of his professional journey.

Outside of work, Krishna enjoys backpacking, motorcycle rides with friends, and running. He is passionate about exploring new places, traveling to destinations across India and aspiring to expand his travels globally in the future.

One of Krishna’s proudest contributions extends beyond his professional achievements. After being matched with a patient battling blood cancer—a rare occurrence, as only a small percentage of registered donors ever become a lifesaving match—he chose to serve as a stem cell donor. He completed the donation for someone he had never met, and the patient later recovered. Krishna considers this experience one of the most impactful moments of his life.

When Krishna first joined WellSky’s Bangalore office, he recalls it feeling like a small, startup-style team. As the office has grown, so has his appreciation for the company’s culture and its commitment to employees. He is grateful for colleagues who have supported his development and encouraged him to push boundaries while maintaining strong engineering practices.

Krishna is currently deepening his expertise in GCP services and AI/ML, continuing to expand his capabilities in building modern data products and platforms. When asked what he would tell someone considering a career at WellSky, he keeps his message simple: “You’re going to have a rewarding career here.”
