Inside the Internship: Automating Workflows at WellSky

Editor’s Note:

This summer, we welcomed a group of talented interns to the WellSky engineering team. Over the course of several months, they contributed to real projects, asked big questions, and became part of the fabric of our teams. Through our Inside the Internship series, we’re sharing the internship experience and highlighting what they built, what they learned, and what surprised them along the way. In this post, we’re kicking things off with Emma Roy, who dove headfirst into automation and left her mark with a powerful GitHub workflow solution. Here’s what she shared.

--------

My time at WellSky as an intern this summer has been immersive, fulfilling, and incredibly supportive — it’s been a really valuable experience overall.

What I quickly discovered while working alongside the engineering team was how everyone seems to have their own niche within software development. Even people on the same team can be working on completely different things, which really showed me how both broad and specialized the field can be.

One of the most rewarding parts of my experience was definitely the project where I got to work on an automated GitHub workflow for generating SQL rollback scripts. I was excited to work on this because not only did it generate reliable rollback scripts for database deployments, but it also performs automated code reviews, suggests indexes to boost performance, and flags missing primary keys. Getting to contribute to something that adds real value was a great feeling.

Looking back, one thing I’ll take with me is that asking questions is one of the best ways to grow. Instead of trying to figure everything out on my own, I’ve found that reaching out to those around me not only helped me learn faster but also opened doors to sit in on meetings and gain insights I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

For anyone starting an internship, I’d highly recommend exploring your local chamber events – I found so much value in the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce. It is such an amazing way to network with interns from different companies and form meaningful connections in a fun environment.
